Things to know about
Hiking in Kootenay National Park
Kootenay National Park, located in the southeast corner of British Columbia is a spectacular destination for hikers of all levels. From deep canyons and icy rivers to alpine meadows and hot springs, here’s what you need to know before lacing up your boots:
The park offers a wide range of hikes, from easy strolls like Marble Canyon to full-day challenges like Stanley Glacier or Kindersley–Sinclair Loop. With over 200 km of maintained trails, there’s something for families, photographers, and serious trekkers alike. Our Signature Hike will have you checking off hikes like these all summer long!
Kootenay is home to grizzly bears, black bears, elk, and more. In our safety briefing, we will teach you how to carry bear spray, how to use it, and we always travel in groups. Many trails pass through prime wildlife habitat, so awareness is key to staying safe.
Mountain weather is unpredictable. Even in summer, you might encounter sudden storms or chilly winds. Dress in layers, bring a rain shell, and always pack the essentials. Don't worry, we'll help you with a hiking packing list depending on which adventure you take.
Snow can linger on some trails well into July, especially above treeline. We'll ensure you're well prepared with information from Parks Canada if there are any unique trail conditions or wildlife activity to be aware of.
Overnight camping permits and day park passes are required for backcountry hiking in Kootenay National Park. We've got that covered! All you need to do is respect all park rules and follow Leave No Trace principles to protect these fragile alpine environments.
Highway 93 South (the Banff–Radium highway) runs through the park, making trailheads easily accessible by car; we'll carpool to the trailhead. There is no cell phone service where we're going, but we've got emergency satellite systems, just in case. All you need to do is be prepared to disconnect to reconnect.
